Wooden Grates or Eggcrate
A wooden grate (also called eggcrate, rickenbacher or boat decking with the square or rectangular design) can be an excellent way to control airflow in your home while adding an attractive design feature that will last for generations to come. We at American Wood Vents craft our grates from premium solid hardwoods using a meticulous interlocking process that ensures stability. Our wooden grates will not warp, and will stand up to regular foot traffic.
We use 4/4 or 5/4 lumber and typically have a 1″ open squares surrounded by 1/2-inch wood pieces cut with the grain, for our grates, making them particularly sturdy. You can order your grate to mount flush to your floor, wall, or ceiling, or you can choose a drop-in model. The drop-in model features a lip that extends beyond all of the sides of the grate, overlaping the surface, to cover up most irregular cut holes and holding it into place. If you need to fit your grate into a tight area, you might want to request that we reduce the size of this lip accordingly.
This style can be used for Air Returns, Supply Vents, Refrigerator vent covers, on Doors and most any thing you can think of. We have even made them for a Mud Room Shoe Racks for the sky lodge.
Finely crafted wooden grates can add style to your home as well as functionality. They might remind you of the woodwork on the port hatches or decking of antique sailing vessels, or the latticework of an elegant trellis or gate. For flush mount styles, you can opt to include a matching wooden frame to give your grate a tailored, custom appearance.
In addition to our trademark golden-hued Red Oak also called Light Oak, our grates are available in many other woods, including red oak, ash, cedar, Brazilian cherry, maple, mahogany, walnut, cedar, and a wide range of others.
